Week 5 Special Needs

Studies have shown that by removing the label educators may have on students with disabilities may have a great beneficial effect on the success of such students. During a summer mathematics program, 84 students were taught math lessons and after some time they were all able to achieve much higher scores. Observers were not able to differentiate between the children with disabilities and the students without! Students with disabilities can often contribute many things to the lesson using the different ways that they think. Children with disabilities may think differently however they may understand the same concept. If teachers were able to learn how to teach students who think in a variety of different ways many more students would be given a chance to succeed despite their disability. Using technology students can express their way of thinking in a conducive way. Being that technology is so versatile many students regardless of their ability can use it to help them learn in a goo...

Keystone: Case Study

Case Study: Faye Friedman Dr. Hsu Keystone- Case Study Sara is an adorable 4-year-old in the class that I observe. She is an exceptionally bright student despite her various disabilities. Sara has a severe speech problem which makes it hard for her to communicate. It is often very hard to understand what she is saying making her get very frustrated. Being that Sara is a very bright student she often has what to say yet has difficulty expressing herself. As a result of her speech problem she developed social issues which prevents her from interacting well with peers and work in group settings. Since the classroom is often put into groups and peer work is encouraged Sara must be accompanied by an aide to enable her to be able to perform all the necessary classroom activities. Her aide tries to help her mingle amongst her classmates however, if needed they just work on their own. Additionally, Sara has sessions with a speech therapist at least three times a week. Being that s...

The issues they face when young 9 year olds only become larger and harder if it isn’t taken care of until they are older. ELL students can gain the most if they are taught when they are young. Besides for improving their self-esteem and confidence it helps them navigate the world they live in. ELL students are often missing a drive and a will to succeed since they are often not motivated being that they feel like failures. As educators it is our responsibility to help them succeed and prevent them from feeling such feelings of despair and failure. Studies have shown that technology has really helped ELL students navigate their new language. Technology provides students with a variety of resources that helps them learn the English language. Resources such as audio-visuals or programs that help students practice words and their pronunciations really help ELL students. Of course technology i...

UDL universal designed learning

UDL is a learning program designed to help teachers plan curriculum's that will be accessible to all students regardless of their abilities. By planning and designing a universal curriculum all students can gain. Teachers must provide students with multiple representations of the lesson. Using multiple ways of representing the lesson can help students of various strengths learn. Additionally, teachers should provide students with multiple activities to be able to express what they know. Using various different activities students can express their understanding in multiple ways depending on their ability. Finally, engagement, students will vary in what will interest them and stimulate them therefore teachers should try to provide them with multiple ways of engagement to get them into the lesson in their own way.

Diversity in the classroom

Ethnic diversity has always been an important issue in the U.S. education system. Since the U.S. is the most culturally diverse country they are constantly looking for ways to improve the acceptance of different ethnicity in the education systems. Studies have shown that more and more students are benefiting from learning in a culturally diverse setting. Students who are culturally diverse are gaining tremendously since they feel comfortable in their surroundings and therefore they are able to do better academically. Teachers have noticed how when the class was culturally accepting all students those who were culturally diverse and those who were not all gained from have cross-ethnic friendships. Even the regular students gained from this attitude and these friendships. Students feel more accepted and comfortable when they are in a culturally accepting environment and therefore they have more of a drive to do well in school and with their peers. To enable students to be able to thr...
