Week 5 Special Needs

Studies have shown that by removing the label educators may have on students with disabilities may have a great beneficial effect on the success of such students. During a summer mathematics program, 84 students were taught math lessons and after some time they were all able to achieve much higher scores. Observers were not able to differentiate between the children with disabilities and the students without! Students with disabilities can often contribute many things to the lesson using the different ways that they think. Children with disabilities may think differently however they may understand the same concept. If teachers were able to learn how to teach students who think in a variety of different ways many more students would be given a chance to succeed despite their disability.
Using technology students can express their way of thinking in a conducive way. Being that technology is so versatile many students regardless of their ability can use it to help them learn in a good and interesting way. I order to ensure that our special Ed students learn properly we must give them the correct tools along with the correct method of teaching in order to ensure their success.

Sara has a severe speech problem which makes it hard for her to communicate. It is often very hard to understand what she is saying making her get very frustrated. Being that Sara is a very bright student she often has what to say yet has difficulty expressing herself. As a result of her speech problem she developed social issues which prevents her from interacting well with peers and work in group settings. Since the classroom is often put into groups and peer work is encouraged Sara must be accompanied by an aide to enable her to be able to perform all the necessary classroom activities. Her aide tries to help her mingle amongst her classmates however, if needed they just work on their own. Additionally, Sara has sessions with a speech therapist at least three times a week. Being that s...
